PHOTO OF THE MONTH

FIRST HAMPSHIRE & DORSET LIMITED  VEHICLE MOVEMENTS

This picture of 47307 was taken in the early afternoon sun at Lee-on-the-Solent on the UVG Running Day on 17 December 2011. This event was organised for members with the full co-operation of First Hampshire & Dorset. On that occasion, the three remaining Dart/UVGs 47302/4/7 (N602/4/7 EBP) operated on local Fareham routes 33, 34 and 36 between 09.00 and 15.00hrs so we could take a ride or capture a picture of them before they disappear from the local scene. John Sherwin travelled on this UVG from Fareham to the terminus of 36 at Lee-on-the-Solent and managed to film the bus, although the strong sunlight during the day was not helpful! Originally, there were seven in the batch: 601-7, delivered new to Hoeford depot in late 1995, the last to arrive in ‘People’s Provincial’ livery. They have a Dennis Dart 9.8SDL chassis with B40F body. It is anticipated that these three will be withdrawn soon.

SOCIETY NEWS

The Provincial Society was formed at the inaugural Annual General Meeting on 1st March 2003 and was registered as a charity on 9 July 2004. It brings together people interested in all aspects of the operation and vehicles of the former Provincial Tramways Company, the Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Company and the Provincial Bus Company, together with all successor and associated companies from 1878 to the present day.

After the successful launch of two books in 2011 - Terry Lawson's: 'Provincial's RELLs' and Fred York's: 'Strangers in town - 1 : Express coaches', we are planning to publish the following in 2012:

Provincial Fleet History   1870 - 1929  by  Stewart Brett
Provincial Fleet History   1970 - 1987  by  Chris Richardsen
Strangers in town - 2: Non-PSVs  by  Fred York

In addition, there will a special publication launch to mark the start of the Bus Rapid Transit operations in April.

Owing to demand, a reprint of People's Provincial Fleet History @ £15 will be printed. Full details of all these will be placed on this website and, when available, the books will appear on the shop order form.

Our rally is held at Stokes Bay on the first Sunday of August.

We are working closely with the local bus company – First Hampshire & Dorset Ltd.  For more details of our events, please check this website regularly or contact John Sherwin.
